Some years ago I visited the hospital. And what happened there made me sad the whole day.
When I entered I saw one old helpless woman, probably in her 60s. She needed the help of one of the nurses. She wanted to visit the washroom, and needed someone to help her push her wheelchair. So she weakly beckoned one of the nurses around, in a very humble manner, to help her.
To my utmost surprise, the nurse understood what the old woman's actions were implying, yet she entered one of the rooms, almost angrily. When she came out the woman beckoned her again. And what the nurse shouted to her shook me.
"But what has this got to do with me, woman? My green and white will be soiled! As for me, I only inject and prescribe pills. So what is the meaning of your constant calling, madam? Excuse me, my uniform may be soiled!"
The old helpless woman blinked, and then, tears flowed down her cheeks. Everyone was embarrassed. So another nurse went to her, placed a hand on her shoulders, and helped her.
But on my way home I was asking myself something very important: Is this how Florence Nightingale would have treated her? I know not all nurses are like that. So the other uncaring ones, please why?
